As ebikes are getting among the most popular bikes in the streets, a new trend started also: tuning your e-bike. In the car industry this means adapting your car to your preferences with special items but in the bike industry it means: "speeding it up". It must be said that the legislation around the speed of the e-bikes is a bit awkward. Pedelecs are allowed to have assistance until 25 km/h and Speed Pedelecs until 45 km/h. The main reason why people often tune their Pedelec is because the 25 km/h is just a little bit to slow and don't have the budget to buy an expensive Speed Pedelec. There is a mutual understanding that adapting the laws up to max 30 km/h with be a huge difference and even an opportunity for the bicycle market. Just think about all those race bikes that could have a assistance to 30 km/h. Of course we realise that speeding it up mean also that there are more risks involved. Accidents at higher speed always have bigger consequenses. When it comes to the braking system, we found that almost all brand/bikes you can buy in a bike store with a mid motor or rear motor have the necessary (hydraulic) braking system and quality components.
The French government has legislated the prevention of e-bike tuning. With the start of 2020, it’s forbidden to increase the power of the e-bike drive system with which the regulated speeds of 25 km (for regular electric bicycles) or 45 km (for speed pedelecs) can be exceeded. The new law provides for the possibility of imposing fines of up to 30,000 euro, or even one year in jail in the event of violations. So think twice if you are planning a trip in France with your tuned bicycle !! Be warned. |
